More than 100 children hospitalized with diarrhea

JAKARTA (Agencies): The government and hospital officials said Saturday that more than a hundred young children were being treated for diarrhea and three people have contracted leptospirosis, a potentially fatal disease borne by water contaminated by rat urine.

“We are very busy,” said Caroline Kawinda, spokeswoman at Koja hospital in North Jakaarta, where many of the diarrhea cases were being handled.

“We have had a surge in patients in the past two days,” she was quoted by AP as saying.

Indonesia is hit by deadly floods each year, and Jakarta is not immune. But this year’s have been particularly bad, with some 100,000 homes, shops and businesses swamped in rich and poor areas alike. (**)
